Public thanked for attending Gweedore Sewerage Scheme event

Irish Water, working in partnership with Donegal County Council, would like to thank the members of the public who attended the recent public information day at Amharclann Ghaoth Dobhair.

Up to 200 people attended the event which was organised to outline to the public details of the innovative solution being put forward for the Gweedore Sewerage Scheme.

Irish Water would also like to thank the elected representatives and the local Chamber of Commerce who have been supportive of Irish Water’s plans for this area.

Irish Water has identified a solution, which has been used successfully in several other countries, for the provision of sewerage treatment services for the residents and businesses of Gweedore. The solution will meet the needs of the local community and ensure compliance with the Urban Waste Water Directive.

Following extensive investigations Irish Water has determined that due to the specific ground conditions and the dispersion of homes in the Gweedore area, a traditional waste water network would not work. Having examined all possible alternatives the utility is proposing to install a pressure sewer system which will allow for the use of an existing waste water treatment plant in the area which Irish Water will take ownership of and upgrade. This solution will ensure that houses and businesses in the Gweedore area can be connected to this public system regardless of location.

Speaking after Tuesday’s open day Irish Water’s Sustainability Policy & Innovations Lead Mark O’Callaghan said: “Since the day we met the elected representatives and our follow on meeting with the Chamber of Commerce it has been clear to see that there is a genuine excitement about this project. A scheme had been promised in Gweedore for many years and working with Donegal County Council we are delighted to be delivering it. We had a fantastic turn out on Tuesday, people were keen to see the plans for their area and this project is going to have a very positive impact on the community.”

Mr O’Callaghan added: “This system is capable of expanding to accommodate any future domestic, business and commercial connections, as required, supporting the future economic growth of the region while ensuring the water quality in Gweedore Bay is protected and improved.”

To progress the implementation of this system Irish Water will, with local co-operation, proceed with a demonstration project involving 20 to 30 houses which will be operated and monitored for a period of eight to 12 months. This will give the stakeholders an opportunity to see the system in action. This will be followed by a roll out of the main scheme which will have the benefit of any learnings from the demonstration project.

Glacann Uisce Éireann buíochas le pobal Ghaoth Dobhair as ucht a bheith i láthair ag lá eolais maidir leis an scéim séarachas atá beathaithe don cheantar

15ú Bealtaine 2017 - Ba mhaith Uisce Éireann, atá ag obair i gcomhpháirtíocht le Comhairle Contae Dhún na nGall a mbuíochas a chuir in iúl do mhuintir phobal Ghaoth Dobhair a tháinig chuig an lá eolais a bhí ar siúl in Amharclann Ghaoth Dobhair Dé Máirt seo caite.

D’fhreastal suas le 200 duine ar an ócáid a bhí eagraithe chun an pobal a chuir ar an eolas faoin scéim séarachas nuálach atá beartaithe ag an bhfóntas náisiúnta don cheantar.

Ba mhaith le Uisce Éireann freisin a mbuíochas a chuir in iúl dona h-ionadaithe tofa agus an comharchumann áitiúil a léirigh tacacíocht do phleananna an fhóntais.

Tá córas aimsithe ag Uisce Éireann, córas atá tar éis a bheith in úsáid i roinnt tíortha eile timpeall na cruinne, chun dul i ngleic le fadhbanna fuíolluisce an cheantair agus a chomhlíonann treoir Chóireáil um Fuíolluisce Uirbigh.

Tar éis tabhairt faoi thaighde cuimsitheach sa cheantar, creideann Uisce Éireann nach n-oibreódh an gnáth cur chuige ó thaobh scéimeann séarachais mar gheall ar choinníollacha áirithe dromcla agus an dóigh ina bhfuil na tithe scartha amach óna chéile sa cheantar.

Tar éis do Uisce Éireann gach rogha a scrúdú go mion, tá sé beartaithe córas fuíoll-bhrú uisce a suiteáil agus an t-ionad chóireála a uasdhátú fosta. Ciallaíonn an t-uasghrádú seo go mbeifear in ann gach teach agus gnó a cheangal leis an gcóras seo cibé áit a bhfuil siad lonnaithe.

Dár le Mark O'Callaghan atá ina Chinnire Inbhuanaitheachta agus Nuálachas in Uisce Éireann “ón lá gur casadh orainn na h-ionadaithe tofa agus baill ón gcomharchumann áitiúil, is léir go raibh siad ar bís faoin tionscadal seo. Bhí sé ráite le muintir an cheantar seo go raibh scéimeanna áirithe ag teacht leis na cianta go mion minic agus tá muid féin agus Comhairle Contae Dhún na nGall rímeádach go mbeidh muid ag soláthar scéim séarachais sa deireadh thiar thall don cheantar. Bhí slua breá i láthair Dé Máirt. Theastaigh ón bpobal na pleananna don cheantar a fheiceáil lena súile féin agus beidh tionchar an-dearfach ag an tionscadal seo ar phobal Ghaoth Dobhair”

Chuir sé leis an méid sin ag rá go bhfuil “an ábaltacht ag an gcóras seo méadú amach chun freastal a dhéanamh ar fás daonra nó nascanna breise gnólachtaí más gá. Tacaíonn sé sin le fás ar bith a thagann chomh maith le cinntiú go bhfuil caighdeán agus cáilíocht uisce i mBa Ghaoth Dobhair cosanta agus feabhsaithe”.

Chun tús a chuir leis an gcóras, agus le comhoibriú ón bpobal áitiúil, cuirfidh Uisce Éireann idir scór agus 30 teach ar líonra an chórais ar feadh 8-12 mí ionas go bhfeicfidh muintir na háite agus Uisce Éireann an córas ag oibriú ar bhun praicticiúil de. Déanfadh Uisce Éireann leathnú amach ar an scéim ina dhiaidh sin agus gach a bheidh le foghlaim sa gcéad thrémhse ag dul chun sochair don chóras iomlán ina dhiaidh sin.
